The temple is located on a small hill with road access. The hill is also calld Thirumalai and it is considered south Thirupathi. A king of Thondai mandalam, a staunch devotee of Lord Vekatesaperumal, once fought a battle with his enemies in which the Lord helped his devotee for victory. The Lord Venkatesa Perumal graced the king with his divine dharshan and gave instruction to build a temple here.

Sri Eri Katha Ramar temple on the bank of Mathuranthagam lake, the second largest in Taminadu, is located at the centre of Mathuranthagam town. The Presiding Sri Ramar with Sita devi, Lakshmanar and Anjaneyar is great to pray and worship. The Urchavar Sri Karunakara Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi is also seen in front of the presiding deity. Legend goes that when Rama is returning from Lanka after defeating Ravana, He alighted here to have the dharshan of Sri Vibanda Maharishi. In memory of this episode, every year on Kanum Ponga day, Sri Ramar with Sita and Lakshmanar used to visit the neibouring Karunkuzhi village, where the ashram of Vibanda Maharishi was existed.
